Both the Helmsman long-term recovery program and Mobile Mission are started.

The Helmsman program was started to address the need for continued care long term. This program helps restore lives that have been nearly destroyed by alcohol and drug addiction. Many Bethesda guests have a substance abuse problem and accompanying dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors. The Helmsman program offered a Christian framework for change that extended the time guests could stay at the shelter. This long term focus helps freed men from the bondage of addiction by sharing, praying, reconciling broken relationship and experiencing God’s love.

In the same year, Bethesda’s Mobile Mission starting bringing assistance directly to the streets for homeless individuals. Blankets, sleeping bags, warm clothing, food and water bottles and among some of the items found in the Mobile Mission’s fully-equipped “Samaritan Service” vehicle. The Mobile Mission began in order to bring hope and critical help to Harrisburg’s street population.
