An empty Giant Food Stores bag begins its journey down the assembly line.

One by one, volunteers stationed along the table add a canned vegetables, pasta, cereal, soup, and other pantry staples and pass it along to the next person. The volunteers never leave their

stations. Gradually, the bag moves from hand to hand, filling with food that will help put meals on the table for families facing difficult circumstances.   

Within minutes, the empty bag is full. Another takes its place, and the process begins again.

On any given week, volunteers at Bethesda Mission’s Food Bank pack between 300 and 450 food bags. By the end of the month, 1,500 bags will be filled and distributed through local churches and nonprofit organizations to individuals and families throughout Central Pennsylvania.

For nearly 20 years, one of those volunteer teams has come from Calvary Methodist Church of Dillsburg.

Pat has coordinated the church’s monthly volunteer group for two decades, faithfully recruiting friends and fellow church members to spend a morning serving their neighbors.

She didn’t begin volunteering because she loved assembly lines or packing groceries. She came because she saw Bethesda Mission as a local ministry making a significant impact in the community, and she wanted to be part of that work.

More Than a Morning of Service

Today, serving at the Food Bank has become part of the rhythm of life for many of the volunteers she has recruited. Some have been coming for years. One volunteer began serving alongside her family more than a decade ago. Although her children have grown up and moved away, she still returns each month. 

“It’s become a time of friendship,” she said.

That sense of community is evident around the assembly line. Conversations flow easily as bags move from station to station. There is laughter, encouragement, and a shared understanding that every bag represents someone who will soon open it at home.

Before the volunteers arrive, Bethesda Mission staff organize every item on the assembly line so the process runs smoothly. Together, volunteers and staff transform pallets of donated food into bags that will help families across the region.

Once packed, the bags are stored until one of Bethesda Mission’s partner churches or nonprofit organizations requests them. More than 17 community partners distribute the bags throughout Central Pennsylvania, extending Bethesda Mission’s reach far beyond its doors.

What happens in the Food Bank may seem simple. Fill a bag. Pass it along. Repeat. But the impact reaches much further than the assembly line.

Each bag represents a family who will gather around the table for a meal. It reflects the faithfulness of volunteers like Pat, who have quietly served month after month, year after year. And it reminds us that hope often begins with ordinary people who are willing to give their time to help others.
