From Hopelessness to Hope: Celebrating 14 Graduates
This month, 14 men graduated from our shelter program—each one with a story of perseverance, growth, and new beginnings.
April 2026
Where They Started. When these men first arrived, many were facing serious challenges. Addiction, untreated mental health struggles, and limited life skills had left them feeling isolated and without direction. Most came through our doors believing they were alone—with little hope for change. But here, they found something different: support, structure, and a path forward.
Real Transformation. One graduate, Ed, reflects the kind of transformation we see every day. After 18 years of addiction, he came to the shelter struggling with both substance abuse and untreated mental health issues. Without access to proper care, he had turned to street drugs to cope, losing his job and stability along the way. Through the program, Ed began addressing his mental health for the first time. That became the turning point. Today, he is nine months clean and building a new future.
How the Program Works. Our program is designed around each individual. There is no set timeline—men work with a life coach to set and achieve personal goals. For some, the journey takes a few months; for others, closer to a year. Over time, they learn not just how to recover—but how to live well. The focus is simple: lasting change.
Participants engage in:
• Drug and alcohol recovery classes
• Life skills training
• Anger and emotional management
• Work responsibilities and teamwork
A Foundation That Lasts. Faith and mentorship are at the core of everything we do. As men grow spiritually, they begin to see their lives differently—with purpose, direction, and value. “When there is hope, you can pursue the positive,” our director shared.
Measurable Impact. The results of the flexible and individualized program speak for themselves. Seven years ago, about 70% of men returned after leaving the program. Today, that number has dropped to just 10%. We don’t just prepare men to leave—we prepare them to succeed.
Graduates leave with:
• Employment or a clear path to work
• Stable housing
• A support system, including church and accountability relationships
A Moment Worth Celebrating. Graduation is a powerful milestone. Surrounded by family, friends, staff, and former graduates, these men are celebrated for their hard work and transformation. It’s more than a ceremony—it’s a new beginning.
More Alike Than You Think. If there’s one thing we want people to understand, it’s this: these men are not so different from anyone else. And they are deeply grateful—for the chance to rebuild, for the support they’ve received, and for the hope they’ve found here at our house of mercy, Bethesda Mission.
