Boxcar Indy – Lend A Helping Paw Program Promotes Community Engagement in Harrisburg’s Allison Hill Neighborhood

Children’s Summer Financial Literacy Program Embraces Local Partnerships to Bring Community Stewardship Project to Life

Harrisburg, PA: Harrisburg has gone to the dogs this summer with the Boxcar Indy – Lend A
Helping Paw Program
. The new program was designed by Tremendous Leadership as part of
4-Legged Leadership division which offers youth character development materials and curriculum. The lessons and activities are based around the adventures of Boxcar Indy, a dog
who is learning about saving money so that he can afford a trip to Doggy World, and teach
children the foundational concepts of financial literacy and responsibility in fun and unique ways.
Weaving together the concepts of saving, budgeting, and financial goals, the program uses engaging activities to teach children valuable skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

In addition to teaching kids financial literacy skills, the Lend A Helping Paw Program helps kids put those skills to use in a real-world environment by creating a project to serve the local community. Participants have worked alongside staff and volunteers from the Bethesda Mission Youth Center and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region for the last four weeks to design and implement a project to benefit the local Allison Hill neighborhood. Together they developed a sidewalk mural project, created a budget and crafted a proposal. Program sponsors, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, PSECU and Americhoice Federal Credit Union, hosted a Bark Tank panel on July 25th. The kids presented their proposal for funding “consideration” and Dr. Elie Phanor, Chair of the Accounting Department at Central Penn College, announced the Bark Tank panel’s decision to fully fund the sidewalk mural project. On August 1st, the kids began to put their proposal into action, painting the base coat for the mural and prepping for the big week of painting on August 8th

Local artist Earl Broggins, owner of The Hidden Arts, has graciously donated his time and talents to sketch the mural prior to the big painting week when dozens of volunteers will arrive to bring his sketch to life. The mural project is slated for completion on August 15th when a ribbon cutting ceremony and Doggy World Carnival will celebrate the unveiling of the project. The ceremony and Carnival are free and the community is warmly invited to attend. Guests can enjoy activities, games, face painting, caricatures, snacks and more.

“Watching the kids nurture their seed of an idea into a fully formed project has been
tremendous,” says Tracey C. Jones, President of Tremendous Leadership. “Their innate tendency toward teamwork and kindness has been truly incredible to watch and I’m so proud of their achievements!”

This program is sponsored by Americhoice Federal Credit Union, Members 1st Federal Credit
