A Mouthful of Miracles: Our Dental Clinic

Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. –Rev. 21:4b

Our Dental Clinic provides the highest level of care to our guests through partnerships with local dentists.

The clinic’s motto, “From God’s Heart, Through Human Hands,” conveys the importance of the work being done at the clinic as it provides both hope and healing to those close to the Master’s heart.

The work there also mirrors the truth of Revelations 21. Through the critical procedures performed every week at the clinic, men and women experience restoration that takes away the physical and emotional pain caused by tooth decay. Cavities, infections, fractures, and more are cleaned, treated, and repaired. Those former things have passed away.

A Bit of History
This healing, made possible through the skilled dentists who donate their time and talents (and often even their treasure), was originally envisioned by Dr. David Russell. At the time, dental support was one of the final frontiers of access Bethesda had to offer to meet the holistic needs of the hurting and homeless.
This vision came alive in 2011 through the generosity of numerous donors. Bethesda opened a small clinic in a second-story bedroom at the Men’s Shelter. This helped alleviate issues involved in handling dental emergencies and scheduling routine visits.
In 2014, our medical and dental clinics were completely overhauled. An entire wing of the Men’s Mission was transformed for the purpose of providing high-level dental services to a greater number of individuals each week.

Grant funds were secured, allowing us to hire a manager, hygienist, and dental assistant. This enabled us to more effectively plan for and utilize dentists, who wanted to make a difference for those in need.
Talent and Teamwork
After working for 25 years at a private practice and a few years in dental insurance, Dental Clinic Manager Sharie Fisher came to Bethesda Mission in 2020.
Over her time here, she has seen lives transformed. “We get to return smiles to our patients,” she shared. “Some have broken teeth, and they are in constant pain. We give them back their health and confidence.

The Dental Clinic is one of the first touchpoints for incoming guests as they do a preliminary assessment to set up a treatment plan, if necessary. “They feel very vulnerable,” Sharie stated. “They know significant work needs to be done.”
Dental treatment significantly improves guests’ outcomes. “While they are in pain, there is an urge to self-medicate,” Sharie added. “Gum disease, cavities, and rot can all lead to serious health complications if not treated properly and promptly.”
Moreover, dental work can lead to emotional healing. “One guest used his hand to hide his mouth,” Sharie said. “Now, he shows everyone his teeth.”
Dr. Bill Waring has been volunteering at the Mission for 5 years. He heard about Bethesda from a staff member at his office.
“Bethesda’s guests need and deserve the highest level of care possible, as the likelihood of having continued care is lower,” Dr. Waring stated. “[This] dental work is part of their recovery, and it gives them confidence and restores their health.”
Serving at Bethesda Mission has greatly impacted Dr. Waring as well. “I love it,” he shared. I enjoy helping [guests] on their journey to wholeness. Many guests have not had the opportunity to have basic care, so it’s a privilege to do that.”
Our staff and volunteers make dental treatment and holistic recovery possible for our guests. By utilizing their talents and teamwork, they showcase what can happen when individuals pursue meaningful service together.
