The Story Behind the Campaign
In 2009, Bethesda completed the renovation of our landmark facility, the Men’s Shelter, with half the $4M price tag coming from foundations and the remaining amount from a Bridge Loan. You’ve probably heard the story recounted – twice Bethesda attempted to relocate the Shelter but was denied by the City; in all likelihood, relocating would have cost less than renovating the existing 97 year-old former Pennsylvania Railroad YMCA structure. Many have commented, upon seeing the renovation, that God had directed us to beautifully restore this“beacon on a hill.”
The decision to renovate the Men’s Shelter at its present location was a ‘once in a 50 plus years’ kind of decision for Bethesda Mission. This decision literally preserved the presence of the Mission in this community for many years to come.
The Bridge Loan totaling $2.4M becomes due in August 2012; to date approximately $375,000 has been raised in pledges and cash. Retiring this loan represents Bethesda’s “Elephant in the Room” (or as it also has been labeled, “the 800 lb gorilla”).
“Do A 180 for Bethesda” is asking our donors, churches, businesses, schools and individuals from our community to contribute $180 toward underwriting the cost for the emergency renovations and upgrades to the Men’s Shelter. These gifts will help eliminate the Bridge Loan, which seriously threatens the survival of this ministry to the men, women and at risk youth whose lives are wonderfully impacted and transformed.
Isaiah 40:28 records God’s comfort to the Israelites in this exhortation: “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”
During these next days, Bethesda will be calling upon a local host – you, our donors and this community. We are calling each person to understand this story and the necessity for the restoration of this refuge located at 611 Reily Street, emblematic of Bethesda’s ministry that has rescued, redeemed and restored thousands of lives. We are calling you to respond beyond your customary gifts.
Please prayerfully consider the impact your sacrificial gift would mean at this crucial time.
May God Richly Bless You,
Chuck Wingate, Executive Director
